Chapter Nineteen

The girls disappeared upstairs to settle Cindy into what he hoped was a guest bedroom far, far away from Samantha’s room. He’d been with the woman seven hours ago but the absence might as well have been seven months. The amount of female flesh he’d seen in his years was obscene, but Samantha’s effect on him had wiped away any earlier intimacies like an ocean wave over fresh footprints in the sand.

He glanced at a smiling Carina and Alexander. They’d slipped into reminiscing—or so he thought. The hand flurries grew more animated, laughter peeling from both of them. Carina was visibly more relaxed. Alexander’s presence often had that effect, as if nothing bad could happen to anyone while he was in the room.

Carina retrieved a Scotch bottle from a cupboard, and Alexander took the moment with her back turned to say to him, “Derek, Carina and I will be a while. We have a lot of years to catch up on.” His eyes darted to the stairway.

“Alexander, someday you’ll have to tell me how you know each other.”

“Let’s just say Carina was instrumental in helping me find my people here in Washington.”

His people? He’d never heard Alexander talk so colloquially. Asking him anything, however, was a conversation for another time.

“You’ll reassure her I’m not going to bring ruination to her granddaughter’s honor? She’s bound to know where I’ve gone.” He dipped his chin at Carina who now put ice cubes into a tumbler.

“Don’t worry. Carina is special.”

He hoped so, because Derek slipped up the stairs with nothing G-rated in mind while praying, dear God, that Samantha’s bedroom and the guest room wouldn’t be a Jack-and-Jill set up. He should have paid more attention to the house layout a few days ago. His cock tightened at the memory.

At the top of the stairs, the dark, quiet hallway reminded him of every horror film he’d ever seen. With every step, floorboards complained. Samantha’s door cracked open.

“What took you so long?” She urged him forward.

She gave off more tension than an overloaded pressure cooker. Time to let off some steam.

He grasped the side of her neck and pulled her in close. “Later. Right now, you’re going to let me take care of you.”

Her smile was seriously going to be the death of him.

“Clothes off. Get on the bed. Hands on the headboard. Legs spread.”

She positioned herself, spread eagle, in the center of her comforter. When her hands curled into the brass scrolls, his overeager cock pressed against his zipper. He was going to do so many things to this woman.

“We killed the boas the other night,” she breathed. “I’m out of chocolate, too.”
